We deserve to lie down in our shame and be covered by our disgrace. Ever since we were young, we and our ancestors have sinned against our God, Yahweh. We failed to really listen to your voice, Yahweh our God.”

We have all sinned so much, just like our fathers. “Guilty” is written over our lives.

Our fathers who were delivered from Egypt didn’t fully understand your wonders, and they took you for granted. Over and over you showed them such tender love and mercy! Yet they were barely beyond the Red Sea when they rebelled against you.

So let my Satan-like accusers fail! Make them look ridiculous if they try to come against me. Clothe them with a robe of guilty shame from this day on!

Poverty and disgrace come to the one who refuses to hear criticism. But the one who is easy to correct is on the path of honor.

Why didn’t I take seriously the warning of my wise counselors? Why was I so stupid to think that I could get away with it?

“You have never heard nor understood; your ear had not been opened beforehand. Though I knew that you would fight against me as a rebel from birth,

But if you presume to light your own torch, you are playing with fire. So go ahead, walk in the light of your own fires and the sparks you have kindled. But I can promise you this: it will take you down into torment!

The people of Judah worship as many gods as they have cities. They have as many altars to burn incense to that shameful one, Baal, as they have streets in Jerusalem.

The people planted wheat but reaped nothing but weeds. They wearied themselves for nothing. They will be disappointed by their small harvest because of the burning anger of Yahweh.”

Yahweh, we acknowledge our wickedness before you— we have sinned against you, just like our fathers did.

Our guilty sins cry out against us; in our rebellion, time and time again, we have sinned against you. Yahweh, do something to help us, for the sake of your honor.

Israel, you have no one to blame but yourselves! You stubbornly turned away even though Yahweh, your God, was leading you the right way.

Your own wickedness punishes you. Your own unfaithfulness rebukes you. Look deep into your heart and you will learn how evil and bitter it is to forsake me, Yahweh your God, and have no awe of me. I, Yahweh, Commander of Angel Armies, have spoken.”

“Go, preach this message publicly for all Jerusalem to hear: ‘Yahweh says to you: “ ‘I fondly remember the single-hearted devotion you had for me in your youth. You loved me deeply as a bride loves a bridegroom. You followed me closely in the desert, in a land where no crops grow.

“Just as a thief is ashamed when caught in the act, so all Israel will be shamed— your kings and princes, your prophets and priests.

Why was I even born? Was it just to experience toil and sorrow and spend my days in shame?

I warned you in your prosperous times, but you said, ‘I don’t want to hear it.’ You have treated me like that ever since your youth, refusing to listen to me.

Only admit your guilt! You have rebelled against Yahweh your God. You have lavished your love on foreign gods under every green tree. You have not listened to my voice. I, Yahweh, have spoken.’ ”

Although we turned away, we have repented. You made us aware of our guilt, and we hung our heads, for we were deeply ashamed and humiliated, and we bear the disgrace of our youth.’ ”

My dear people, it’s time to mourn. Put on sackcloth and sprinkle ashes on yourselves. Mourn as you would for an only child. Wail bitterly, for suddenly the destroyer will be upon us.

Yet, I am not the one they are hurting, says Yahweh; they are hurting themselves to their own shame.

Why are we just sitting here? Let’s band together and go inside our walled cities and await our death, since Yahweh our God has condemned us to die. He has given us our bitter poison to drink, for we have sinned against him.

Let them hurry and wail over us that our eyes may overflow with tears and our eyelids gush with water.

Our joyful celebrations are over. We have sinned, and we are doomed!

Our ancestors sinned, and they are no more; and now we suffer their punishment.

And I heard him speaking to me, saying, “Son of man, I am sending you to the rebellious sons of Israel who have refused allegiance to me. They and their ancestors have been in revolt against me up to the present day.

People of Israel, I assure you that it is not because you are good that I am going to do all this. You should be utterly ashamed over your conduct! I, Lord Yahweh, have spoken.’

They will never draw near to me again to fulfill the priestly office in my presence, nor will they ever again touch my holy things—my very, very holy things! They must bear the shame and disgrace of their despicable deeds.

Terror covers them as they put on sackcloth. Shame covers their faces as they shave their heads bald.

“Multitudes of those who are sleeping in the Land of Dust will awaken, some to everlasting life, some to shame and everlasting disgrace.

So tell me, what benefit ensued from doing those things that you’re now ashamed of? It left you with nothing but a legacy of shame and death.

and you are never, never to make a covenant with the inhabitants of this land. You must tear down their altars to their false gods!’ But you have not listened to my voice. See what you have done!
