“When many foreigners pass by this city and each one asks another, ‘Why did Yahweh do this to such a great city?’

“And when you prophesy all these words to that people, and they ask you, ‘Why has Yahweh decreed all this great evil against us? What is the wrong and the sin that we have committed against Yahweh our God?’

He took me aside and said to me, “Your God, Yahweh, prophesied disaster for your country,

and now he has brought it to pass. He has done what he threatened to do because your people sinned against Yahweh and would not listen to his voice. So all this has happened to you.

No king believed, nor anyone anywhere, that a hostile foe could ever break through the gates of Jerusalem.

But I will let a few of them escape the sword, plague, and food shortages. I will let them live so that they can describe all their terrible actions to the people in the lands where they will go. And they will recognize that I am Yahweh.”

You will feel better when you see their evil way of life and actions, for then you will realize that I had a good reason to do what I did. I, Lord Yahweh, have spoken.”

The nations will also realize that the people of Israel went into captivity because of their guilt, for they were unfaithful to me. So, I hid my face from them and gave them over to the power of their enemies, whereby they were all killed in war.

You will be mocked and insulted. Your downfall will be an appalling lesson to the surrounding nations. This will happen when I execute judgment on you in my furious anger and with my furious punishment. I, Yahweh, have spoken.

Righteousness belongs to you, Lord, but we are all covered with shame even to this day—the people of Judah, the residents of Jerusalem, and all Israel, near and far. You have scattered us to many lands because of our treachery against you.
