The Passion Translation

‘Here is what Yahweh, the God of Israel says to King Zedekiah: Behold! I am going to take the weapons your troops are using to fight the Babylonians who are outside the city, and I will gather them together there.

You’ll have no option but to cringe among the captives or fall among the corpses of the slain! Yet despite all this, his anger has not subsided, and his hand is poised to strike.

Listen! A thunderous noise is heard on the mountain, like that of a massive multitude. Listen! Kingdoms are in an uproar; nations are assembling together. The almighty Lord Yahweh is mustering an army for war.

So let me tell you what I am about to do to my vineyard. I will tear down its fence and it will be plundered. I will break down its wall and it will be destroyed!

For Yahweh says to you: ‘I am making you a terror to yourself and to all your friends, who will be killed in battle while you look on. I will give all Judah into the hands of the king of Babylon. He will take them captive to Babylon or kill them with the sword.

Look! The Babylonians have already set up siege ramps to take the city! Jerusalem is now within their clutches. The people will suffer from war, food shortages, and disease when they attack the city. What you prophesied has now come true, as you see.

King Zedekiah had imprisoned me because I had prophesied Yahweh’s message: “I am Yahweh, and I am about to let the king of Babylonia conquer Jerusalem.

Then Zedekiah will be taken captive to Babylon, where he will remain until I am finished with him. If you fight against the Babylonians, you will not succeed. For I, Yahweh, have decreed it.”

The defenders of the city will go out and battle the Babylonians, but this will only serve to fill the ruins with the corpses of men who are the victims of my furious anger. I have hidden my face from this city because of all their evil.

So now, I, Lord Yahweh, God of Israel, Commander of Angel Armies, say to you people of Judah and Jerusalem: I spoke to you, and you would not listen; because I called to you and you would not answer me, I will bring upon you all the destruction I have decreed against you.’ ”

When the Babylonians captured Jerusalem, the king’s leading officials took their seats in the Middle Gate to form their military government: Nergal-Sharezer, Samgar-Nebo, Sar-Sechim a high dignitary of state, Nergal-Sharezer the king’s chief adviser, and all the other officials of the king of Babylon.

They also took the ash pots, the shovels, the snuffers, the sprinkling bowls, the incense bowls, and all the bronze vessels that had been used in worship.

In his burning anger, he shattered all the might of Israel as her enemies approached. He raged among his people like a flaming fire, which consumes everything near it.

The Lord became our enemy; he destroyed Israel. He devastated all her palaces and ruined her strongholds. He has multiplied weeping and wailing for Daughter Judah.

The Lord has rejected his own altar and disowned his sanctuary. He has given the walls of her fortresses to her enemies. When the enemy toppled Yahweh’s temple, they shouted for joy like it was a festival day.

I will knock the bow from your left hand and rip the arrows out of your right.

This infuriated the king! So he sent his soldiers to execute those murderers and had their city burned to the ground.
