Look how you cheapen yourself by constantly shifting your course. Egypt will put you to shame just as Assyria did.

And those who put their hope in ‘glorious Cush’ and ‘mighty Egypt,’ will be shattered and totally ashamed.”

Why, then, would you now go down to Egypt to drink the waters of the Nile? Why would you go to Assyria to drink from the river Euphrates?

“How dare you say, ‘I have not defiled myself. I’ve not chased after false gods.’ Look how you behaved badly in the valley. Don’t you realize what you’ve done? You’re like a restless wild camel running loose

How skillfully you pursue your lovers; even the worst adulterers could learn from you.

“Go up to the peaks of Lebanon, you people of Jerusalem, and cry out. Raise your voice in the heights of Bashan, cry out from the mountains of Moab, for all your lovers, the nations you trusted in, are crushed.

Now you will be disgraced and humiliated because of all your evil. Your leaders will be swept away like dust in the wind, and your lovers, the nations you trusted in, will be captured and dragged into captivity.

Faithless one, how long will you hesitate? For Yahweh is creating something new on earth. A woman will rescue a warrior!”

The nations have heard of your humiliation; all the world has heard your scream. For your warriors stumble over each other. No one escapes with his life.”

We strained our eyes continually and looked, watching for help that never came. From our watchtowers we waited for a nation to help, for a nation that could not save us.

We made a pact with Egypt and Assyria just to have enough food to eat.

Still unsatisfied, you prostituted yourself to the Assyrians and played the harlot with them. But even then, you were not satisfied.

Wherever they grasped you, you broke in their hands and splinters pierced their hands. Whenever they leaned on you, you collapsed, and sent them sprawling.
