I planted you like a special vine from the absolute best seed, but look at what you’ve become now! You’re like a twisted, rotten vine.

It is true; I have singled him out as my own, so that he will lead his family and household to follow my ways and live by what is right and just. I will fulfill all the promises that I have spoken to him.”

“Not anymore,” the man said to him. “Your new name is Israel, for you have struggled both with God and with people and have overcome.”

For you are his servants, the true seed of Abraham, and you are the chosen ones, Jacob’s sons.

Remember how you transplanted us here like a tender vine from Egypt. You cleared the land for your vineyard, evicting the nations from your land and planting us here. The roots of your vineyard went deep into the soil and filled the land with fruit.

Look how the once faithful city has become as unfaithful as a prostitute! She who was once the “Center of Justice,” where righteousness made its home, is now the dwelling place of murderers!

In that day, they will sing the song “The Vineyard of Delight.”

“But you—my servant, Israel, Jacob, whom I’ve chosen, seed of my beloved friend Abraham —

What more could I have done for my vineyard? When I expected it to bear luscious grapes, why did it produce only wild, worthless grapes?

All your people will be righteous and will permanently possess the land. I planted them there as a tender sapling, the work of my own hands to display my glory.

to strengthen those crushed by despair who mourn in Zion— to give them a beautiful bouquet in the place of ashes, the oil of bliss instead of tears, and the mantle of joyous praise instead of the spirit of heaviness. Because of this, they will be known as Mighty Oaks of Righteousness, planted by Yahweh as a living display of his glory.

I, Yahweh, once called you a green olive tree, full of leaves and bearing beautiful fruit. But with the sound of a great roar, I will set fire and consume its branches.

For I, Yahweh, Commander of Angel Armies, planted you and have decreed disaster against you because of the evil of the people of Israel and the people of Judah. You have provoked me to anger by burning incense to Baal.”

“Here is what I, Yahweh, have decreed: ‘I will send your enemies to cut the branches from your vines, but they won’t destroy them completely. I will tell them to strip away your branches. The people of Judah and Israel have been utterly unfaithful to me and are no longer mine.’ ”

How the gold has lost its luster! How the pure gold has lost its value! The sacred stones lie scattered at the corner of every street.

“Son of man, how is the wood of the grapevine different than that of other tree branches of the forest?

“Pay close attention to this parable,” Jesus said. “There once was an honorable man who planted a vineyard. He built a fence around it, dug out a pit for pressing the grapes, and erected a watchtower. Afterward he leased the land to tenant farmers and then went a distance away.

Then Jesus began to speak to them in parables: “There once was a man who planted a vineyard and put a secure fence around it. He dug a pit for its winepress and erected a watch tower. Then he leased it to tenant-farmers and traveled abroad.

Jesus taught the people using this story: “A man once planted a vineyard, then leased it out to tenants. Then he left to go abroad and was away for a long time.

“I am a true sprouting vine, and the farmer who tends the vine is my Father.

Israel was faithful to serve Yahweh during the lifetime of Joshua and the lifetime of the elders who lived on after Joshua, those who had experienced all the miracles that Yahweh had done for Israel.
