“Long ago, you broke your bond with me and severed ties. You boldly said, ‘I will not serve you!’ Yet, on every high hill and under every green tree, you offered yourself to other gods. You were like a prostitute sprawled out awaiting sex.

His light broke through the darkness and he led us out in freedom from death’s dark shadow and snapped every one of our chains.

“Let’s come together and break away from the Creator. Once and for all let’s cast off these controlling chains of God and his Christ!”

Look how the once faithful city has become as unfaithful as a prostitute! She who was once the “Center of Justice,” where righteousness made its home, is now the dwelling place of murderers!

In that day the Lord will remove the heavy burden from your shoulders and break off the yoke of bondage from your necks because of the heavy anointing upon you!

Only admit your guilt! You have rebelled against Yahweh your God. You have lavished your love on foreign gods under every green tree. You have not listened to my voice. I, Yahweh, have spoken.’ ”

“In that day,” declares Yahweh, Commander of Angel Armies, “I will break off the yoke from your neck and snap your chains, and foreigners will no longer enslave you.

Let me go to the people in power, and let me speak to them. Surely, they must know what Yahweh demands and what God requires of them.” Yet they, too, have renounced obedience to God and have torn themselves away from him.

Still unsatisfied, you prostituted yourself to the Assyrians and played the harlot with them. But even then, you were not satisfied.

You built an elevated shrine on every street to worship idols, put up your pavilion in every public square. But you are not like a common prostitute just out for the money.

They will burn down your homes and execute justice on you while many other women look on. I will once and for all put an end to your wicked harlotry—no more paid lovers for you!

When I had brought them into the promised land, they discovered all sorts of high hills and all kinds of spreading trees. That is where they offered sacrifices and made offerings to false gods that provoked my anger. That is where they burned incense and poured out drink offerings to false gods.
