The rebellion of sin speaks as an oracle of God, speaking deeply to the conscience of wicked men. Yet they are still eager to sin, for the fear of God is not before their eyes.

now you will eat the bitter fruit of your own ways. You’ve made your own bed; now lie in it! So how do you like that?

Like an idiot you’ve turned away from me and chosen destruction instead. Your self-satisfied smugness will kill you.

Beware that your sins don’t overtake you and that the scars of your own conscience don’t become the ropes that tie you up.

The look on their impudent faces says it all, for they publicly flaunt their sin like Sodom, not even trying to hide it. Woe to their souls, for they invite disaster upon themselves.

So let me tell you what I am about to do to my vineyard. I will tear down its fence and it will be plundered. I will break down its wall and it will be destroyed!

Yahweh asks, “Have I abandoned you? Can you show me your mother’s divorce papers that prove I sent her away? Do you think I sold you into slavery to pay off a debt? No, you sold yourselves into slavery because of your sins, and because of your rebellion I sent your mother away!

I will pass sentence against the people of Jerusalem and Judah for all their wickedness in deserting me. They have sacrificed to other gods and worshiped the works of their hands.

And when you ask yourself, “Why are these things happening to me?”— it is because your sin was so enormous that your skirts are lifted up and your private parts exposed.

Israel, you have no one to blame but yourselves! You stubbornly turned away even though Yahweh, your God, was leading you the right way.

“Come back to me, you unfaithful ones! Let me heal your waywardness and restore your faithfulness.” “We’re here! We’re coming back to you, Yahweh, because you are our God.

“You have brought this on yourself by your deeds and your lifestyle. Your evil and your bitterness have reached your heart. This is your doom!”

I, Yahweh, am speaking to you. Do you not fear? Do you not tremble in awe in my presence? I made the sand as a border for the sea, an ancient barrier that it does not pass. Though the waves roar and beat against it, they can neither go beyond it nor break through it.

They never say in their heart, “Let us now give reverence to Yahweh our God who gives us showers at the time of his favor, the early and latter rain in its season, and graciously gives us a harvest each year.”

Therefore, a lion from the forest will attack them, and a desert wolf will ravage them. A leopard is prowling around their cities, waiting to tear those apart who venture out. For the people are rebellious; they’ve sinned repeatedly.

Yet, I am not the one they are hurting, says Yahweh; they are hurting themselves to their own shame.

So why have you, the people of Jerusalem, continually refused to turn back to me? Why do you cling so tightly to your deception instead of coming home to me?’ ”

You have brought all this on yourself because you have played the whore with the nations and have made yourself unfit for my presence by worshiping their idols.

I treated them as their despicable deeds of infidelity deserved and hid my face from them.”

They shut their eyes to the awe-inspiring God!

Because you have abandoned me to serve false gods, I am no longer coming to your rescue!
