“My people are guilty of a double sin: they have abandoned me, the Spring of Living Water, and they have dug for themselves cisterns — cracked cisterns that hold no water.”

The fountain of life flows from you to satisfy me. In your light of holiness we receive the light of revelation.

Even a dumb ox instinctively knows its owner and the stubborn mule knows the hand that feeds it, but Israel does not know me nor do my people understand.”

Oh, how this nation keeps sinning! See them dragging the heavy burden of their guilt! They are corrupt children, descendants of evildoers. They have turned their backs on the Lord God and despised the Holy One of Israel! They have cut themselves off from the help of God!

With triumphant joy you will drink deeply from the wells of salvation.

Therefore, my people go into exile for lack of understanding. Their leaders are starving, their multitudes parched with thirst.

Why spend your hard-earned money on something that can’t nourish you or work so hard for something that can’t satisfy? So listen carefully to me and you’ll enjoy a sumptuous feast, delighting in the finest of food.

For he said, “Truly, they are my loyal children who will not act deceitfully.” He became their Savior.

I will pass sentence against the people of Jerusalem and Judah for all their wickedness in deserting me. They have sacrificed to other gods and worshiped the works of their hands.

The elite send their servants for water, but when they come to the cisterns, they are bone dry. So, they return with their vessels empty. Humiliated, they cover their faces with shame.

I, Yahweh, say to you: You left me, turned your back on me, and walked out. So, I have stretched out my hand to punish you. I am weary of feeling sorry for you.

Yahweh, you are the only hope of Israel! All who forsake you will be covered with shame. Those who turn away from you will be written in the dirt. To forsake you, Yahweh, is to forsake the fountain of living waters.

Does the snow on Lebanon’s mountains ever melt away? Do the cold mountain streams ever run dry?

For they, their ancestors, and the kings of Judah have defiled this place and forsaken me. They have sacrificed here to strange gods, whom they never knew, and have filled this place with the blood of innocent people.

Has a nation ever traded in its gods (even though they are not really gods)? But my people have bartered away their glory in exchange for gods who do nothing.

Israel, you have no one to blame but yourselves! You stubbornly turned away even though Yahweh, your God, was leading you the right way.

“Just as a thief is ashamed when caught in the act, so all Israel will be shamed— your kings and princes, your prophets and priests.

“My people are foolish because they don’t know who I really am. They are reckless, senseless children. They think they are wise, but they are cunning in sinfulness and clueless in righteousness.”

“Lurking among my people are wicked criminals. They are like hunters hiding to catch birds in their nets, setting their traps to catch people.

The prophets prophesy lies, and the priests lead out of their own self-interest. And my people love it that way. But what will they do when judgment comes?”

And in this way I hope to capture the hearts of the people of Israel who have all been estranged because of all their idols.’

Then the shining man brought me back to the entrance of the temple, and I saw water flowing from underneath the temple threshold. It was flowing eastward (for the temple faced east). Water was trickling out from the south side of the temple, south of the altar.

Jesus replied, “If you only knew who I am and the gift that God wants to give you, you’d ask me for a drink, and I would give you living water.”

The woman replied, “But sir, you don’t even have a bucket, and the well is very deep. So where do you find this ‘living water’?

but if anyone drinks the living water I give them, they will never be thirsty again. For when you drink the water I give you, it becomes a gushing fountain of the Holy Spirit, flooding you with endless life!”

Then on the most important day of the feast, the last day, Jesus stood and shouted out to the crowds—“All you thirsty ones, come to me! Come to me and drink!

These people are dried-up riverbeds, waterless clouds pushed along by stormy winds—the deepest darkness of gloom has been prepared for them.

Then he said to me, “It has been accomplished! For I am the Aleph and the Tav, the beginning and the end. I will give water to all who are thirsty. As my gracious gift, they will continuously drink from the fountain of living water.

Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, flowing with water clear as crystal, continuously pouring out from the throne of God and of the Lamb.

“Come,” says the Holy Spirit and the Bride in divine duet. Let everyone who hears this duet join them in saying, “Come.” Let everyone gripped with spiritual thirst say, “Come.” And let everyone who craves the gift of living water come and drink it freely. “Come.”

Because you have abandoned me to serve false gods, I am no longer coming to your rescue!
