The Passion Translation

“ ‘And I will also frustrate the plans of Judah and Jerusalem in this place. I will cause their bloodthirsty enemies to triumph over them, and I will give their dead bodies as food to the beasts of the field and birds of the sky.

All your brilliant wisdom and clever insight will be of no help at all if the Lord is against you.

So therefore, I will again jolt this people awake with astonishing wonders upon wonders! And the wisdom of their wise ones will fail, and the intelligent know-it-alls will have no explanations.

Go ahead, hatch a plot, but it will be foiled! Go ahead, speak a word, but it will not stand, for God is with us!

And if they ask you, ‘Where are we to go?’ answer them, ‘Here is what Yahweh says: “ ‘Those destined to die by the plague, go die by the plague. Those destined to die by the sword, go die by the sword. Those destined to die by food shortages, go die by famine. Those destined for captivity, go into captivity.’ ”

She who was honored to have seven children grows faint; robbed of her children, she wasted away. Her sun has set while it is still day. She is shamed and disgraced. Any who are left alive, I will hand them over to the sword of their enemies,” declares Yahweh.

They will die of deadly diseases. No one will mourn for them or bury them; their bodies will lie like dung on the ground. They will be consumed by the sword and by food shortages, and the birds and beasts will feast on their corpses.”

Therefore, may their children experience food shortages, and let them be killed by the sword. May death and warfare take away the men and youths, leaving the women as childless widows.

“ ‘And after this, declares Yahweh, I will hand over Judah’s king, Zedekiah, his officials, and everyone else in the city who survives the disease, war, and food shortages, to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon and their enemies. He will slaughter them with the sword and show no mercy, pity, or compassion.’ ”

He will have a donkey’s burial. He will be dragged outside the gates of Jerusalem and left on the ground to rot.”

I will hand you over to the power of those who seek your life, into the hands of those you dread—King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon and the Babylonians.

Therefore, I say to you, I will hand Jerusalem over to the Babylonians and to Nebuchadnezzar the king, and he will conquer it.

I will hand them over to their enemies, to those determined to kill them. And their dead bodies will be food for the birds and beasts.

I will hand them over to those who seek their lives, to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and his commanders. But afterward, Egypt will be inhabited again as in the past,” declares Yahweh.

Their corpses will be food for the birds and wild animals with no one to frighten them away.

They will spread them out before the sun and the moon and all the stars of heaven, which they loved and served. They went after cosmic powers, inquired of them, bowed down before them in adoration, and worshiped them. Because they did these things, their bones will not be buried but will become fertilizer for the ground.

How dare you say, ‘We are wise, because we have the law of Yahweh?’ Look! The scribes teach lies about the law. They have made the law itself into a lie!

The know-it-alls will be shamed, terrorized, and trapped. They walked away from the word of Yahweh, so wisdom walked away from them.

Who can make anything happen unless the Lord is willing?

Does emphasizing our faith invalidate the law? Absolutely not. Instead, our faith establishes the role the law should rightfully have.

For if keeping the law earns the inheritance, then faith is robbed of its power and the promise becomes useless.
