Yahweh says, “Who will feel sorry for you, people of Jerusalem? Who will mourn for you? Who will even bother to ask about your welfare?

Twin calamities have come upon you, but who will feel sorry for you? Disaster and devastation, famine and war, but who will comfort you?

“ ‘And after this, declares Yahweh, I will hand over Judah’s king, Zedekiah, his officials, and everyone else in the city who survives the disease, war, and food shortages, to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon and their enemies. He will slaughter them with the sword and show no mercy, pity, or compassion.’ ”

I’m heartsick and heartbroken by it all. Their contempt has crushed my soul. I looked for sympathy and compassion but found only empty stares.

For Yahweh says: “You are not to enter a house of mourning or go there to lament and to console them. For I have lifted my favor off that people,” declares Yahweh. “I will no longer show them my kindness and compassion.

And I will smash them one against the other, parents and children alike, says Yahweh. I will show no pity or compassion, and my mercy will not stop me from destroying them.’ ”

So they stopped there and came to Micah’s house where the young Levite lived, and they greeted him.

Zion stretches out her hands for help, but there is no one to comfort her. At Yahweh’s command, Jacob’s neighbors became her enemies. They all treated Jerusalem as though she were a bloody rag.
