The Passion Translation

How much longer will the land mourn? How much longer must the birds and animals perish? Even the grass of every field withers because of the wickedness of these people! For the people boast, “God doesn’t see what happens to us.”

Or he can take a fruitful land and make it into a saltwater swamp, all because of the wickedness of those who dwell there.

All this you have done and I kept silent, so you thought that I was just like you, sanctioning evil. But now I will bring you to my courtroom and spell out clearly my charges before you.

The ground itself mourns and withers; the soil languishes over the sins of its people, and the wealthy elite wither and languish.

Therefore a curse devours the earth; its people suffer under their guilt, causing earth’s inhabitants to dwindle, and their number is reduced to so few.

They have left it a wasteland— wasted, waterless, and empty before me. The whole land is laid waste, yet there is no one who seems to care.

“Judah is weeping, and her doors are dark with discouragement. Her people sink to the ground in mourning; their cries of lament rise from Jerusalem.

The land is full of people unfaithful to him; they lead wicked lives and misuse their power. Because of a curse, the land is in mourning, and the pastures of the wilderness have dried up.

I looked for a human, but not one was to be found. Every bird had flown away.

This is why the earth will mourn, and the heavens will veil their light— because I have spoken. I will neither relent nor turn away from my plans.’ ”

The prophets are full of hot air, and they do not have the word of Yahweh in them. May their threats backfire upon themselves!”

The prophets prophesy lies, and the priests lead out of their own self-interest. And my people love it that way. But what will they do when judgment comes?”

Therefore, listen to the words of the Lord Yahweh: ‘My anger and my wrath will be poured out in this place, on the people and the animals, on the trees and on the crops; my anger will burn as a fire that no one can put out.’

I will weep and wail for the mountains and sing mournful songs for the pasturelands, for they are burned, with no one passing through. No one hears the lowing of cattle; birds and beasts of the field have fled—they are gone.

I, Yahweh, will hold them accountable for these things. And I will take vengeance to punish a nation such as this.”

To this day we are aware of the universal agony and groaning of creation, as if it were in the contractions of labor for childbirth.
