Yahweh comes to issue the guilty verdict of the elders and leaders of his people, saying: “You are the ones who have ruined the nation! Your houses are full of what you’ve stolen from the poor!

So I brought disgrace on the holy priests of the holy sanctuary and brought destruction to Jacob, humiliation and scorn to Israel.

For a short time your holy people possessed a holy place. But now our enemies have invaded and trampled down your sacred sanctuary.

Yahweh declares, “Doomed are the shepherds who scatter the sheep of my pasture and cause them to be destroyed!

and their peaceful meadows are reduced to silence because of Yahweh’s furious anger.

The lion has left his lair, and their land is left a wasteland because of the sword of the oppressor and because of his fierce anger.

‘Behold, I will summon my servant Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, along with all the northern armies, and bring them to fight against this land, its people, and all these surrounding nations. I will devote them to destruction and make them a desolation. I will turn them into ruins forever. Everyone will be utterly astonished by the sight of what I have done to them.

“I, Yahweh, said: “ ‘What bliss would fill my heart to treat you like an honored son! What joy would fill my heart to give you a land of delights, the most glorious and beautiful inheritance among the nations.’ I longed for the day when you would call me ‘Father’ and not turn away from me.

When the Babylonians captured Jerusalem, the king’s leading officials took their seats in the Middle Gate to form their military government: Nergal-Sharezer, Samgar-Nebo, Sar-Sechim a high dignitary of state, Nergal-Sharezer the king’s chief adviser, and all the other officials of the king of Babylon.

As shepherds pasture many flocks all around a city, so the camps of enemy soldiers encircle you, like many flocks of grazing sheep.

I will weep and wail for the mountains and sing mournful songs for the pasturelands, for they are burned, with no one passing through. No one hears the lowing of cattle; birds and beasts of the field have fled—they are gone.

“Son of man, prophesy against the leaders of Israel; prophesy and say to them, ‘Listen, you leaders, Lord Yahweh has a message for you: Disaster is in store for the shepherds of Israel whose only concern is to feed themselves. Aren’t shepherds supposed to feed the sheep?

Because there was no shepherd to care for the sheep, they were scattered and were eaten by every wild beast.

Then I heard a holy one speaking. Another holy one asked the first one, the Wonderful Numberer, “How long will it be until this vision is fulfilled, in relation to the daily sacrifice, the rebellion that causes desolation, the handing over of the sanctuary, and the trampling underfoot of the host of God’s people?”

Yet determine in your hearts not to prepare for your own defense. Simply speak with the words of wisdom that I will give you that moment, and none of your persecutors will be able to withstand the grace and wisdom that comes from your mouths.

But exclude the courtyard outside the temple, for it has been given over to the nations, and for forty-two months they will trample on the holy city.
