The Passion Translation

They have turned back to commit again the same sins of their ancestors, who ignored my words. They, too, have chased after foreign gods to serve them. The people of Israel and the people of Judah have broken my covenant that I made with their ancestors.

Like traitors turning back, they forsook him. They were even worse than their fathers! They became treacherous deceivers, crooked and corrupt, and worshiped false gods in the high places, bringing low the name of God with every idol they erected. No wonder he was filled with jealousy and furious with anger!

The people have polluted the earth beneath their feet by disobeying laws, violating truth, and breaking the ancient, everlasting covenant.

These evil ones refuse to hear my words, they stubbornly follow the inclinations of their own hearts, and they follow other gods to serve and worship them. So then, they will all become like this worthless, rotten undergarment.

(Yet they would not listen or obey; they stubbornly refused and would not obey or accept instruction.)

the reply will be, ‘Because they forsook the covenant with Yahweh their God and worshiped and served other gods.’ ”

It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt. They broke that covenant even though I was their husband,” declares Yahweh.

“You claim to speak to us on behalf of Yahweh, but we refuse to listen to you whatsoever!

But you would not listen or pay attention, in order to turn from your wickedness and stop offering incense to other gods.

Then you will say to them: ‘You are the nation that refused to listen to the voice of your God, Yahweh. Truth has perished and disappeared from their lips, for they did not accept Yahweh’s correction.’ ”

Jeremiah, you live surrounded by oppression, deceit heaped upon deceit, and the people refuse to intimately know me,” says Yahweh.

“For I, Lord Yahweh say to you: I will treat you as you deserve, for you have broken your marriage covenant and despised your promises to me.

You have desecrated my temple by admitting gentiles into my sanctuary who are uncircumcised in heart and body, allowing them into my presence while you offer the fat and blood of sacrifices to me. You have broken my covenant in addition to all the wicked things you have done.

Yet she has rebelled more wickedly against my ways and against my laws than the gentile nations that surround her. Indeed, she has deliberately rejected my commands and not kept my laws.”

It will be an entirely different covenant than the one I made with their fathers when I led them by my hand out of Egypt. For they did not remain faithful to my covenant, so I rejected them, says the Lord God.

The Israelites did what was evil in the sight of Yahweh and worshiped the images of Baal.

Rather than listen to their deliverers, they prostituted themselves to other gods and bowed down to worship them. This new generation quickly turned from the good path and refused to be like their ancestors who actually listened to Yahweh’s commands.

But when their champion died, then the people would relapse into their former idolatry. They would worship other gods, bow down to them, and refuse to give up their evil ways. And each generation behaved worse than the one before it.
