The Passion Translation

Listen! I, Yahweh, declare that I am about to summon all the armies of the northern kingdoms. Their kings will come and set up their thrones at the gates of Jerusalem. They will attack its walls and all the other cities of Judah.

Your lush valleys were full of chariots, and the horsemen took their stand at your gates.

Look, there is news to report! There’s a roar and a rumble coming from the north, coming to make the cities of Judah a rubble and turn it into a den of jackals.

Vent your anger and pour it out on all these nations around us. They’re the ones who do not worship you. See how they’ve attacked the people of Jacob, consuming the land and leaving it desolate.

Lift up your eyes and see the Babylonians coming from the north. What will become of the cities of Judah? Like a beautiful flock of lambs, they were entrusted to your care.

“If they refuse to drink from the cup from your hand, you will say to them, ‘Yahweh, Commander of Angel Armies, says this: You have no choice—drink!

‘Behold, I will summon my servant Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, along with all the northern armies, and bring them to fight against this land, its people, and all these surrounding nations. I will devote them to destruction and make them a desolation. I will turn them into ruins forever. Everyone will be utterly astonished by the sight of what I have done to them.

“They say about this place, ‘It is a wasteland, without people or animals.’ But this is what I, Yahweh, say to you: In the desolate towns of Judah and in the abandoned streets of Jerusalem without people or animals, you will hear once more

Yahweh spoke to me when Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, was at war against Jerusalem and the cities of Judah. He had all his army with him, including soldiers from all the kingdoms of his empire.

When the Babylonians captured Jerusalem, the king’s leading officials took their seats in the Middle Gate to form their military government: Nergal-Sharezer, Samgar-Nebo, Sar-Sechim a high dignitary of state, Nergal-Sharezer the king’s chief adviser, and all the other officials of the king of Babylon.

“Warn the nations of what is coming! Announce to Jerusalem: ‘Watchers are coming from a distant land, shouting a battle cry against Judah’s cities!

Set up a signal to run to Zion. Don’t just stand there; run for cover! I am bringing disaster from the north, terrible destruction is on the way.”

Then say to them, ‘Yahweh, God of Israel, says this: I will send for my servant Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon. He will set up his throne on the exact spot where I buried these stones and spread his royal tent over them.

So I let loose a firestorm of my anger, burning down the towns of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem until nothing remained but a desolate wasteland, as it still is today.

Fair Egypt will be put to shame. I will give her over to the power of a nation from the north.”

I, Yahweh, say to the people of Israel: ‘I am stirring up a distant nation, an ancient, warring nation to attack you. Her people will speak a language you do not know, a language you won’t understand.

This is what Yahweh has said: “Look! They’re coming! Warriors approach from the north. From the remote parts of the earth, a great nation is preparing for war.

“I, Yahweh, will turn Jerusalem into rubble, a den of jackals. And I will turn the cities of Judah into ghost towns where no one lives.”

Our enemies violated Zion’s women and young girls in the towns of Judah.

“ ‘All the princes of the north and all the Sidonians are there. They have gone down in disgrace with the slaughtered because their powerful armies once terrified their enemies. They lie among the uncircumcised dead, those slaughtered by the sword who bear their shame with those who sink into the pit.
