For as the scorching heat of the sun causes the petals of the wildflower to fall off and lose its appearance of beauty, so the rich in the midst of their pursuit of wealth will wither away.

My days are marked by the lengthening shadows of death. I’m withering away and there’s nothing left of me.

Our days are so few, and our momentary beauty so swiftly fades away!

They and their short-lived success will soon shrivel up and quickly fade away, like grass clippings in the hot sun.

We live our lives like those living in shadows. All our activities and energies are spent for things that pass away. We gather, we hoard, we cling to our things, only to leave them all behind for who knows who.

Woe to the pride of Israel’s drunkards, worn like a garland on their heads! Their glory is but wilted flowers, worn like a crown on the heads of those bloated with rich food and overcome by wine.

and the glory of these proud leaders will fade and disappear like the first figs of the season, which are picked and eaten as soon as they are ripe.

They will never be hungry or thirsty. Neither scorching sun nor desert wind will hurt them, for he, the Loving One, will guide them and lead them to restful, renewing streams of water.

but when the days grew hot, they were scorched and withered because they had insufficient roots.

‘You’re treating us unfairly! They’ve only worked for one hour while we’ve labored and sweated all day under the scorching sun. You’ve made them equal to us!’

So if God has clothed the meadow with hay, which is here for such a short time and then dried up and burned, won’t he provide for you the clothes you need—you of little faith?

But when the days grew hot, the sprouts were scorched and withered because they had insufficient roots.

We are to live as those who live in the world but are not absorbed by it, for the world as we know it is quickly passing away.

We are reborn into a perfect inheritance that can never perish, never be defiled, and never diminish. It is promised and preserved forever in the heavenly realm for you!

And when the Shepherd-King appears, you will win the victor’s crown of glory that never fades away.
