Your boast becomes a prophecy of a future failure. The higher you lift yourself up in pride, the harder you’ll fall in disgrace.

Lord Yahweh, you lift your mighty hand, but they do not see it. Let them witness how much you love your people and be ashamed. Let the fire reserved for your enemies consume them.

Woe to the pride of Israel’s drunkards, worn like a garland on their heads! Their glory is but wilted flowers, worn like a crown on the heads of those bloated with rich food and overcome by wine.

That proud crown of the drunkards of Ephraim will be trampled underfoot,

“Listen to me, you stubborn ones who are far from righteousness.

I knew you were stubborn. Your neck is like a rod of iron, and you’re as hard-hearted as brass!

When the royal court was told that Syria had formed an alliance with the northern kingdom of Israel, the heart of King Ahaz and all his people trembled with fear, like trees swaying in the wind.

The Lord decreed a word against Jacob, and it brought calamity upon Israel.

Look! The Babylonians have already set up siege ramps to take the city! Jerusalem is now within their clutches. The people will suffer from war, food shortages, and disease when they attack the city. What you prophesied has now come true, as you see.

That is how I will punish Egypt, and then they will acknowledge that I am Yahweh.”

When all your prophecies come true —and they are beginning to be fulfilled now—they will know that there has been a true prophet among them.”

The king will go into mourning, the officials will be wrapped in despair, and the hands of the people will tremble in terror. I will punish them for the way they have lived and judge them the same way as they have judged others. Then they will be convinced that I am Yahweh!’ ”

I will show you no mercy nor spare you, but I will punish you for your conduct and for all your detestable deeds. Then you will know that I am Yahweh who has punished you.’ ”

In the same way, the younger ones should willingly support the leadership of the elders. In every relationship, each of you must wrap around yourself the apron of a humble servant. Because: God resists you when you are proud but multiplies grace and favor when you are humble.
