The Passion Translation

He was despised and rejected by men, a man of deep sorrows who was no stranger to suffering and grief. We hid our faces from him in disgust and considered him a nobody, not worthy of respect.

I am burdened and broken by this pain. When your miracle rescue comes to me, it will lift me to the highest place.

They’ve all left me here to die, helpless, like one who is doomed for death.

Yahweh, Israel’s Kinsman-Redeemer and Holy One, says to the one who is deeply despised and repulsed by rulers and a slave to the ruling class: “Kings will see and stand up in respect; princes will bow down to honor the faithfulness of Yahweh, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you.”

I offered my back to those who flogged me and my cheek to those who tore out my beard. I never hid my face from demeaning insults or from those who spit on me.

Just as many were appalled at the sight of him (for so marred was his appearance, like an object of horror; he no longer looked like a man),

Even though it pleased Yahweh to crush him with grief, he will be restored to favor. After his soul becomes a guilt-offering, he will gaze upon his many offspring and prolong his days. And through him, Yahweh’s deepest desires will be fully accomplished.

Yet he was the one who carried our sicknesses and endured the torment of our sufferings. We viewed him as one who was being punished for something he himself had done, as one who was struck down by God and brought low.

Then they spat on his face and slapped him. Others struck him over and over with their fists.

They said to him, “Our master, we remember that this imposter claimed that he would rise from the dead after three days.

“I want you to know that we are going to Jerusalem, where the Son of Man will be handed over to the ruling priests and religious scholars and they will condemn him to death and hand him over to the Romans.

And they will mock him, spit in his face, torture him, and kill him, but three days later he will rise again.”

And he said to them, “My heart is overwhelmed with anguish and crushed with grief. It feels as though I’m dying. Stay here and keep watch with me.”

They spit in his face and hit him repeatedly on his head with a reed staff, driving the crown of thorns deep into his brow. They knelt down before him in mockery, pretending to pay him homage.

He answered them, “They’re right. Elijah must come first to put everything in order. And what about all that is written about the Son of Man? It is true that he must endure many sufferings and be rejected.

Now, the Jewish religious leaders listening to Jesus were lovers of money. They laughed at what he said and mocked his teachings,

When Jesus caught sight of the city, he burst into tears with uncontrollable weeping over Jerusalem,

They laughed at him, knowing for certain that she had died.

“The Son of Man is destined to experience great suffering and face complete rejection by the Jewish leaders and religious hierarchy. He will be killed and raised back to life on the third day.”

Then tears streamed down Jesus’ face.

“See! We were right all along!” some of the Jewish leaders shouted. “You’re nothing but a demon-possessed Samaritan!”

He understands humanity, for as a man, our magnificent King-Priest was tempted in every way just as we are, and conquered sin.

During Christ’s days on earth he pleaded with God, praying with passion and with tearful agony that God would spare him from death. And because of his perfect devotion his prayer was answered and he was delivered.
