The Passion Translation

For Israel is this vineyard of Yahweh, the Commander of Angel Armies, and the people of Judah are the garden of his delight. When he waited for a crop of justice, he got a harvest of bloodshed! When he waited to reap fairness, he heard only the cries of victims.

Yahweh said, “Listen—the voice of your brother’s blood is crying out to me from the ground! What have you done?

Yahweh shows favor to those who fear him, those who wait for his tender embrace.

For he enjoys his faithful lovers. He adorns the humble with his beauty, and he loves to give them victory.

Nurture our root and our fruit with your loving care. Raise up the Branch-Man, the Son whom you’ve made strong.

If you close your heart to the cries of the poor, then I’ll close my ears when you cry out to me!

How delicious is your fair beauty; it cannot be described as I count the delights you bring to me. Love has become the greatest.

Look how the once faithful city has become as unfaithful as a prostitute! She who was once the “Center of Justice,” where righteousness made its home, is now the dwelling place of murderers!

You are corrupt from the bottom of your feet to the top of your head. There is no integrity — nothing but bruises, putrefying sores, and raw open wounds! They have not been drained or bandaged or soothed with oil.

In that day, they will sing the song “The Vineyard of Delight.”

Yahweh comes to issue the guilty verdict of the elders and leaders of his people, saying: “You are the ones who have ruined the nation! Your houses are full of what you’ve stolen from the poor!

What gives you the right to crush my people by shoving the faces of the poor into the dirt?” Yahweh, the Sovereign One, Commander of Angel Armies, has spoken.

So the Lord will afflict the foreheads of the daughters of Zion with scabs; Yahweh will make the front of their heads bald in that day.”

Therefore, this is what the Holy One of Israel has to say: “Because you have despised this message, and trust in your own clever abilities to deceive, and rely upon oppression,

“Listen to me, you stubborn ones who are far from righteousness.

First he dug up its ground and hauled away its stones so he could plant within it the choicest of vines. He built a watchtower in the middle of it and carved a winepress out of its rock. He fully expected it to bear good grapes, but instead it produced only worthless wild grapes.

We have rebelled and even tried to deny Yahweh; we have forsaken our God. Our speech stirs up oppression and revolt, and our hearts conceive, then confess, lies.

Justice is driven away and righteousness stands on the sidelines, for truth has stumbled in the public square and morality cannot enter.

No one seeks true justice; no one pleads his case with honesty. They rely on their illusions and misleading lies; they conceive trouble and give birth to sin.

As a young man marries the young woman he loves, so your builder-sons will marry you. As the bridegroom finds joy in his union with his bride, so will your God take joy in his union with you!

Many rulers have destroyed my vineyard. They have trampled my property and have made my magnificent fields into a desolate desert.

One basket was full of excellent figs that ripened early, and the other was full of rotten figs that were not fit to eat.

The earth will shudder at the sound of Babylon’s downfall as their cry echoes to the nations.”

The people of the land have practiced extortion and robbery! They have oppressed the poor and needy and mistreated the foreigner among them who have no way of getting justice.’ ”

“Great sorrow awaits you religious scholars and Pharisees—frauds and pretenders! For you are obsessed with peripheral issues, like insisting on paying meticulous tithes on the smallest herbs that grow in your gardens. These matters are fine, yet you ignore the most important duties of all: to walk in the love of God, to display mercy to others, and to live with integrity. Readjust your values and place first things first.

Don’t you know that God, the true judge, will grant justice to all his chosen ones who cry out to him night and day? He will pour out his Spirit upon them. He will not delay to answer you and give you what you ask for.

He cares for the branches connected to me by lifting and propping up the fruitless branches and pruning every fruitful branch to yield a greater harvest.

Listen! Can’t you hear the cries of the laborers over the wages you fraudulently held back from those who worked for you? The cries for justice of those you’ve cheated have reached the ears of the Lord of armies!
