Therefore a curse devours the earth; its people suffer under their guilt, causing earth’s inhabitants to dwindle, and their number is reduced to so few.

The “powerful elite” will become like kindling and their evil deeds like sparks—both will burn together and no one will be able to put out the fire.

If the Lord of Angel Armies had not left us survivors, our fate would have been the same as Sodom and Gomorrah!

The Lord says: “Indeed, my judgment-sword has appeared in the heavens, and when it has drunk its fill, you will see it descend on the people of Edom, those whom I have doomed to judgment.”

So I brought disgrace on the holy priests of the holy sanctuary and brought destruction to Jacob, humiliation and scorn to Israel.

Therefore, just as tongues of fire lick up the straw and dry grass, they will be destroyed, just as a plant with decaying roots and blossoms dries up like dust and is blown away in the wind. For they said, “No!” to the teachings of Yahweh, the Lord of Angel Armies, and have despised the word of the Holy One of Israel!

The land was scorched because of the anger of the Lord Yahweh, Commander of Angel Armies. The people themselves became fuel for the fire, and no one showed compassion toward another.

How much longer will the land mourn? How much longer must the birds and animals perish? Even the grass of every field withers because of the wickedness of these people! For the people boast, “God doesn’t see what happens to us.”

Therefore, because the people have spoken these lies, Yahweh, the God of Angel Armies, said to me: “See! The words I put in your mouth will be as a fire. My words will consume these people like kindling.

Also keep back a few hairs and wrap them up in the folds of your cloak.

And the crowd replied, “Let his blood be on us and on our children!”

The narrow gate and the difficult way leads to eternal life—so few even find it!”

And the prophet Isaiah cries out to Israel: Though the children of Israel are as many as the sands of the seashore, only a remnant will be saved.

The day of the Lord will come and take everyone by surprise—as unexpected as a home invasion. The atmosphere will be set on fire and vanish with a horrific roar, and the heavenly bodies will melt away as in a tremendous blaze. The earth and every activity of man will be laid bare.
