The people have polluted the earth beneath their feet by disobeying laws, violating truth, and breaking the ancient, everlasting covenant.

His promises have become an everlasting covenant to Jacob, as a decree to Jacob.

Fear and dread overwhelm me. I shudder before the horror I face.

I am the one who has sent him against a godless nation and ordered him to attack a people who anger me. I sent him to take the spoil and seize the plunder and to trample them down like dust in the street.

For they are stubborn rebels, children always telling lies, who refuse to listen to Yahweh’s instruction.

The highways are deserted and the travelers have disappeared. Covenants are broken and witnesses rejected, and no one is respected.

Yahweh asks, “Have I abandoned you? Can you show me your mother’s divorce papers that prove I sent her away? Do you think I sold you into slavery to pay off a debt? No, you sold yourselves into slavery because of your sins, and because of your rebellion I sent your mother away!

That is why the Lord did not show pity to the young people or have compassion on their orphans and widows. For everyone was godless and did evil and each mouth spewed out wickedness. Therefore, the Lord’s anger has not subsided, and his hand is poised to strike them again.

They have turned back to commit again the same sins of their ancestors, who ignored my words. They, too, have chased after foreign gods to serve them. The people of Israel and the people of Judah have broken my covenant that I made with their ancestors.

They will ask the way to Zion and turn their faces toward her, saying to one another, ‘Come, let us bind our hearts to Yahweh in an eternal covenant, which we will never break.’

“For I, Lord Yahweh say to you: I will treat you as you deserve, for you have broken your marriage covenant and despised your promises to me.

But the Israelites rebelled against me in the wilderness and refused to keep my laws and rejected my commands (the one who obeys my laws will live by them), and they completely dishonored my Sabbaths. I was about to vent my fury on them in the desert and destroy them.

I did this because they had broken my laws, refused to obey my commands, dishonored my Sabbaths, and their hearts chased after the idols of their ancestors.

I will make my eternal covenant of peace with them. I will resettle them, and I will bless them and multiply them. I will establish my sanctuary among them forever.

He will speak blasphemous words against the Most High and try to wear down the holy ones of the Most High. He will try to alter the set periods of time and change God’s decree, and the saints will be subjected to his power for a time, times, and half a time.

“Yahweh, we have not listened to your voice, our God, nor kept your instructions that you gave us through your servants the prophets.

Yet we have sinned, acted wickedly, and done evil; we have rebelled and turned aside from your laws and commands.

They were both righteous before God, living virtuously and following the commandments of the Lord blamelessly.

Now may the God who brought us peace by raising from the dead our Lord Jesus Christ so that he would be the Great Shepherd of his flock; and by the power of the blood of the eternal covenant

Now in the first covenant there were specific rules for worship including a sanctuary on earth to worship in.

If you break the covenant our God, Yahweh, made with you and worship other gods and bow down to them, his anger will blaze against you. He will punish you, and he will remove you from the face of this good land he has given you.”

On that day when the people were gathered at Shechem, Joshua made a covenant between them and Yahweh, which contained laws the people were to obey.
