Wail, O gate! Cry out, O city! Melt with fear, Philistia! For a cloud of smoke comes out of the north, and there is no straggler among them.

for the bustling city with its mansions will be deserted. The high ground and watchtower will be empty, becoming the joy of wild donkeys and a grazing ground for flocks.

No matter if hail destroys the forest and the city is leveled,

“ ‘I will march out in front of you and level every obstacle. I will shatter to pieces bronze doors and slice through iron bars.

“I, Yahweh, will turn Jerusalem into rubble, a den of jackals. And I will turn the cities of Judah into ghost towns where no one lives.”

How lonely sits the city once thronged with people! Once great among the nations, she is now lonely like a widow. Once a fair princess ruling among the provinces, now a shackled servant.

The empty roads to Zion mourn, for no one travels to her sacred feasts anymore. The singing maidens suffer, and the priests can only groan. The city gates stand empty, and Zion can only moan.

Her gates have collapsed to the ground; he has wrecked and shattered their bars. Her king and leaders are captives among the gentiles, and instruction from the Torah scrolls is no more. Her prophets, too, receive no vision from Yahweh.

because Mount Zion lies desolate with jackals roaming over it.

This infuriated the king! So he sent his soldiers to execute those murderers and had their city burned to the ground.
