The Passion Translation

Look! Someone’s coming! It’s a man in a chariot with a team of horses. He shouts out, ‘Fallen, fallen, Babylon has fallen! All the idols of their gods lie shattered on the ground!’ ”

God will overthrow Babylon, the jewel of kingdoms, the splendor and pride of the Babylonians, exactly as he did to Sodom and Gomorrah.

you will jeer at the king of Babylon and recite this proverb: “Your oppressor has been stilled and your onslaught is over!

Every worthless idol will utterly pass away.

When he sees them come with chariots and advancing warriors riding on horses, donkeys, and camels, let him be alert—extremely alert!”

“Sit silently and go away into the darkness, O Miss Chaldea! For you will no longer be called the Mistress of Kingdoms.

Suddenly both of these losses will overtake you in one day, for you will lose your husband and your children. Despite your many magic spells and your powerful sorceries, you will be overwhelmed by these tragedies in full measure!

Now, all of you gather around and listen. Which of the gods has foretold these things? I, Yahweh, love this man, and he will carry out my purpose against Babylon. He will be my ‘arm of might’ against the Babylonians!

“Assemble the archers and attack Babylon! Encamp around her and leave no way of escape. Treat her as she has treated others and repay her for all she has done, for she was arrogant and defiant to Yahweh, the Holy One of Israel.

May a drought dry up all their rivers! For it is a country full of idols, and their terrors make them delirious.

Armed with bows and scimitars, they are merciless and without compassion. The sound of their armies riding their horses is like the roaring sea. The cavalry is in battle formation and ready to attack you, Fair Babylon.

For listen, I am stirring up trouble out of the north against Babylon, and raising up a coalition of mighty nations to attack her. They will take up battle positions against her and conquer her. Their arrows are like a skilled soldier who kills and never returns empty-handed.

“Raise up a signal flag throughout the world; sound the war trumpet among the nations! Prepare the nations to attack her! Assemble the kingdoms of Ararat, Minni, Ashkenaz to make war against her. Appoint a commanding officer to lead her enemies in battle; send multitudes of horsemen like swarms of locusts.

I will punish Bel, the god of Babylon, and make him give back what he has stolen. The people will no longer stream to him to bring him their offering. The walls of Babylon have fallen.”

“Behold, the days are coming when I will punish Babylon’s ‘gods.’ Her entire country will be humiliated, with all her slaughtered lying in the streets.

Yahweh declares, “Behold, the days are coming when I will punish Babylon’s ‘gods,’ and throughout the land, wounded people will be groaning in pain.

with these words: ‘Just as this scroll will sink, so Babylon will sink to the depths, never to rise again from the disaster I am going to bring on her.’ ” This ends Jeremiah’s writings.

Suddenly the cup of Babylon falls to the ground and is shattered. Wail for her! Get medicine for her wounds; perhaps she can be cured.

Then a second angel followed, declaring, “She fell! She fell! Babylon the great is fallen! She once seduced the nations and made them all drink the wine of the passion of her harlotry!”

He shouted out with a thunderous voice: “Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great! She has become a demonic dwelling place, a prison for every unclean spirit, unclean bird, and every unclean, detestable beast.

Then a mighty angel took up a stone, like a huge millstone, and threw it into the sea, saying: “With this kind of sudden violence, the great city Babylon will be thrown down and exist no more.
