Woe to you, destroyer, you who have not been destroyed. Woe to you, traitor, you who have not been betrayed. When you have finished your work of destroying, you will be destroyed, and when you have completed your betrayal, you will be betrayed.

You will look back on the fears of your past and say, “Now, where is the scholar? Where is the adviser? Where is the one who numbers those who are maturing?”

He is the one who apportioned it to them by lot, whose hand measured the share of each. They will possess it for all time and dwell there throughout the ages.

You will look for your enemies in vain; those who war against you will vanish without a trace!

You have it coming, and I have precisely measured your punishment,” declares Yahweh, “because you have trusted in lies and forgotten me entirely.

Israel, like the firstfruits of my harvest, I set you apart, and you belonged to me alone. Anyone who devoured you I made to suffer, and I rained disaster down upon them. I, Yahweh, have spoken.’ ”

However, I have taken everything from Esau’s descendants. I have uncovered his hiding places so that he can hide no longer. All the Edomites are ruined, along with their relatives and neighbors, with no one left to say,

They will not have to gather firewood from the countryside or cut it in the forests since they will be burning all the weapons. They will plunder those who plundered them and take spoils from those who took their spoils. I, Lord Yahweh, have spoken.’ ”

Yahweh, may all who hate you perish in the same way! But may those who love you shine like the sun, bright in its strength as it crosses the sky! Then the land had peace for forty years.
