The Passion Translation

I am the one who has sent him against a godless nation and ordered him to attack a people who anger me. I sent him to take the spoil and seize the plunder and to trample them down like dust in the street.

That is why the Lord did not show pity to the young people or have compassion on their orphans and widows. For everyone was godless and did evil and each mouth spewed out wickedness. Therefore, the Lord’s anger has not subsided, and his hand is poised to strike them again.

‘Behold, I will summon my servant Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, along with all the northern armies, and bring them to fight against this land, its people, and all these surrounding nations. I will devote them to destruction and make them a desolation. I will turn them into ruins forever. Everyone will be utterly astonished by the sight of what I have done to them.

The land of Judah will become the dread of the Egyptians. They will quake whenever anybody even mentions it to them, because of what the Lord Yahweh, Commander of Angel Armies, has in store for them!

Frauds and hypocrites! Isaiah described you perfectly when he said:

Jerusalem, wash the evil from your heart so that you may be rescued. How long will evil thoughts and harmful schemes find a resting place in you?

Even after all this, Israel’s treacherous sister, Judah, refused to return to me with her whole heart; instead, she came with only deceitful lies,” declared Yahweh.

So I trampled down nations in my anger and shattered them in my fury and spilled their blood on the ground.”

“I have been treading in the winepress alone, and there was no one there from the nations to help me. I stomped on the nations in my anger and trampled them down in my wrath. Their blood soaked my clothing and stained all my robes.

“I stirred up one from the north, who comes from the rising of the sun. He will call on my name. He will trample rulers into the mud as a potter treads clay.

Sinners in Zion are afraid, and the godless are gripped with panic, saying, ‘Who can dwell with such an all-consuming fire? Who can live in the presence of the never-ending flame?’

This is what the Lord says about these people: “They come near to me with hollow words and honor me superficially with their lips; all the while their hearts run far away from me! Their worship is nothing more than man-made rules.

The Lord Yahweh, Commander of Angel Armies, has a day in store—a day of tumult, trampling, and terror in the “Valley of Vision.” It is a day when they breach the walls and the people cry out to the mountain of holiness.

The land was scorched because of the anger of the Lord Yahweh, Commander of Angel Armies. The people themselves became fuel for the fire, and no one showed compassion toward another.

Their shout is like a lion’s roar, the roar of strong lions growling as they seize their prey. They carry away captives, and none can rescue them.

So let me tell you what I am about to do to my vineyard. I will tear down its fence and it will be plundered. I will break down its wall and it will be destroyed!

For this reason Yahweh’s anger burned against his people, and he struck them down with his holy hand! The mountains trembled, and dead bodies were littered like garbage left in the streets. Even with this, his anger has not turned away and still his hand is heavy upon them!

“The Lord Yahweh is going to bring days of catastrophic trouble—on you, on your people, and on the whole royal court—not seen since the northern kingdom of Israel broke off from Judah. He is going to bring the king of Assyria with his great army!”

It will flood into Judah, swirling over it, overflowing and reaching up to your neck, O Immanuel, and spread out its wings over your entire land!”

The people have polluted the earth beneath their feet by disobeying laws, violating truth, and breaking the ancient, everlasting covenant.

for the fool is recognized by his foolish words. Their minds plot treachery, they excel in ungodliness, and they say misleading things about Yahweh. They refuse to feed the hungry or give drink to the thirsty.

Woe to you, destroyer, you who have not been destroyed. Woe to you, traitor, you who have not been betrayed. When you have finished your work of destroying, you will be destroyed, and when you have completed your betrayal, you will be betrayed.

Your children, your builders, are running back to you as those who ruined and destroyed you are running away.

But Yahweh says: “The prey will be freed from the mighty warrior, and captives will be rescued from a conqueror! For I will fight with those who fight with you, and I myself will save your children.

I am giving him Egypt as a reward for the labor he has undertaken on my behalf. I, Lord Yahweh, have spoken!

I will attack those living among their once ruined cities. I will turn my might against these people gathered from the nations, who acquired livestock and goods, who live in the strategic center of the land. I will plunder them and carry off the spoils.

The people of Sheba and Dedan, the merchants and all the tycoons of Tarshish will ask you: Have you come for plunder? Are you massing your troops to seize spoil? Have you come to carry off gold and silver, cattle and goods, and seize unlimited spoil?’

For before the boy knows how to say ‘my father’ or ‘my mother,’ the wealth of Damascus and Samaria will be plundered and carried away by the king of Assyria!”
