They are coming from a faraway land, from the end of the heavens. Here comes Yahweh with his instruments of judgment, ready to ravage the entire land.

The Lord Yahweh, Commander of Angel Armies, makes this solemn decree: “Be sure of this: Just as I have planned, so it will be. Every purpose of my heart will surely come to pass.

I will crush the Assyrians who invade my land. I will trample them on my mountains. Their yoke of slavery will be removed from my people and their heavy burden from their shoulders.

Behold the land of the Babylonians. They are a people who have lost their identity. The Assyrians have made her a home for wild animals. They erected siege towers against her, demolished her palaces, and made her a heap of ruins.

Go, my people, into your inner chambers and close the doors behind you. Hide for a little while, until his indignation is over.

I will bring distress to Ariel and there will be great mourning. Jerusalem will be to me as the meaning of the name Ariel—a burning altar hearth.

Look! Here comes Yahweh with his mighty power and glory! He comes in his awesome splendor with thick clouds! Consumed with anger, his lips are filled with fury, and his words are a devouring fire!

And Yahweh will cause everyone to hear his awe-inspiring, majestic voice. He will open their eyes to see his mighty power coming down with raging anger and consuming fire! His power will descend in cloudburst, thunderstorm, and hail.

For they are stubborn rebels, children always telling lies, who refuse to listen to Yahweh’s instruction.

For Yahweh has turned his anger toward the nations and his fury against all their armies. He has doomed them to destruction and will annihilate them all.

When you feast your eyes on this, your heart will leap for joy and be revived; your body will flourish and sprout like grass. The mighty power of Yahweh will be revealed, resting on his servants, but his fury will be shown to his enemies!

“The Lord Yahweh is going to bring days of catastrophic trouble—on you, on your people, and on the whole royal court—not seen since the northern kingdom of Israel broke off from Judah. He is going to bring the king of Assyria with his great army!”

In that day, the Lord will take his “razor,” the hired king of Assyria from beyond the Euphrates, and he will shave your head, your legs, and also your beard, leaving you ashamed and exposed!

For before the boy knows how to say ‘my father’ or ‘my mother,’ the wealth of Damascus and Samaria will be plundered and carried away by the king of Assyria!”

now, therefore, the Lord is about to bring against them the mighty, massive flood of the Euphrates. The king of Assyria and all his glory will overflow on you like a river flooding its channels and running over all its banks!

So I will pour out my fury on them, and like a fire I will destroy them. I will punish them for the evil they have done. I, Lord Yahweh, have spoken.”

“ ‘Now is the day of disaster. Behold, your doom has come! Brutality has blossomed, and pride is at its peak.

“The king will grow more and more arrogant and do whatever he pleases. He will exalt himself above every other god, and utter horrendous blasphemies against the God of all gods. He will be successful until God’s wrath reaches the boiling point, for what God has decreed will certainly be fulfilled.
