The Passion Translation

If the Lord of Angel Armies had not left us survivors, our fate would have been the same as Sodom and Gomorrah!

And Yahweh said, “Alright. If I find fifty righteous in Sodom, I will spare the whole city for their sake.”

Then Abraham took a deep breath and asked, “Once more, please don’t let my Lord be angry with me if I make but one more request. What if you find only ten righteous?” And Yahweh answered, “Alright. I will extend my mercy and not destroy the city for the sake of ten righteous.”

And Yahweh’s fire from heaven fell upon Sodom and Gomorrah.

And the daughter of Zion is left as helpless as a deserted shack in a vineyard or a flimsy shelter in a field of cucumbers— in every way like a city besieged!

On that day, the Lord will extend his hand a second time to restore the remnant of his people from Assyria, Egypt, Pathros, Ethiopia, Iran, Iraq, Syria, and the coastlands of the sea.

Then there will be a highway leading out of Assyria for his remnant people to return, just as there was for Israel when they were set free from Egypt.

Yet some gleanings will remain, as when an olive tree is shaken, leaving two or three olives in the highest branches and four or five on its fruitful branches,” declares Lord Yahweh, the God of Israel.

As an olive tree is shaken clean of its olives and a grapevine picked clean of its grapes, so will be the fate of the nations.

Therefore a curse devours the earth; its people suffer under their guilt, causing earth’s inhabitants to dwindle, and their number is reduced to so few.

Perhaps Lord Yahweh, your God, will take note of all the blasphemous words of the Assyrian commander who was sent by his master, the king of Assyria, to ridicule the living God. And may Lord Yahweh, your God, rebuke him for the words he heard him speak. So therefore, we come to ask you to pray for us, the remnant that still survives.’ ”

“Listen to me, O Jacob’s tribes, all the remnant of Israel. You never had to carry me, but I have carried you from birth. I supported you from the moment you left the womb.

Yet if even a tenth remains there, it will be burned again. It will be like a fallen oak or terebinth tree when it is felled; the stump still lives to grow again.” Now, the “stump” is the holy seed.

Here is what Yahweh says: “As new wine is found in the cluster, and someone says, ‘Don’t destroy it, for there is a blessing in it,’ that’s what I will do for my servants’ sake. I will not destroy them all.

And I have seen the prophets of Jerusalem do horrible acts: adultery, persistent lying, and promoting the cause of the wicked, so that no one renounces his evil ways. To me, they are all depraved like Sodom, and the people of Jerusalem are like Gomorrah.

me and said, “Please listen to our humble plea and pray to Yahweh your God for us and for all this remnant. We were once many, but as you see, only a few of us remain.

I, Yahweh, declare that at that time, you may look for Israel’s guilt, but it will disappear, you may search for Judah’s sins, but you will not find them, for I will forgive the remnant whose lives I have spared.”

Yahweh’s tender mercies have no end, and the kindness of his endless love is never exhausted.

The punishment of my beloved people exceeded the judgment of sinful Sodom, which was suddenly destroyed without an army attacking her.

Even so, there will be a remnant left, a few who survive. Enemy soldiers will bring your wicked sons and daughters out of the city, and they will be brought here to Babylon. When you see them and realize how sinful are their ways and deeds, then you will not feel so sad when you understand that I, Yahweh, brought all these disasters upon Jerusalem.

“ ‘I will spare some of you who escape the sword when you are scattered among the nations.

The narrow gate and the difficult way leads to eternal life—so few even find it!”

And the prophet Isaiah cries out to Israel: Though the children of Israel are as many as the sands of the seashore, only a remnant will be saved.

Just as Isaiah saw it coming and prophesied: If the Lord God had not left us a remnant, we would have been destroyed like Sodom and left desolate like Gomorrah!

And don’t forget that he reduced to ashes the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, condemning them to ruin and destruction. God appointed them to be examples as to what is coming to the ungodly.

Their dead bodies will lie on the street of the great city that is symbolically called Sodom and Egypt, where their Lord was also crucified.
