And the daughter of Zion is left as helpless as a deserted shack in a vineyard or a flimsy shelter in a field of cucumbers— in every way like a city besieged!

Then I will sing your praises as I pass through the gates of the Daughter of Zion, rejoicing in your deliverance!

Your country is devastated and your cities burned to the ground; foreigners plunder your crops before your eyes— with nothing but devastation and destruction in their wake!

If the Lord of Angel Armies had not left us survivors, our fate would have been the same as Sodom and Gomorrah!

This very day, standing at Nob, he will shake his fist at the mountain of the daughter of the house of Zion— at the hill of Jerusalem.

I will lay siege to you on all sides, encircling you with towers and raising up my siege works against you.

And may Lord Yahweh, your God, rebuke him for the words he heard him speak. So therefore, we come to ask you to pray for us, the remnant that still survives.’ ”

And the Lord has washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion and cleansed the bloodstains of Jerusalem by a Spirit of justice and by a Spirit of burning.

And you will say to yourself, ‘Where in the world did all these children come from? Who birthed these for me? I thought I was bereaved and barren. I thought I was all alone, forgotten in exile— so how did they all get here?’ ”

See? Yahweh has proclaimed to the ends of the earth: Tell my daughter, Zion, “Look, here comes your Deliverer! See? He’s bringing his reward, and his recompense goes before him.”

It will flood into Judah, swirling over it, overflowing and reaching up to your neck, O Immanuel, and spread out its wings over your entire land!”

The enemies surround Judah and Jerusalem like men who are guarding a field, for Judah has rebelled against me,’ ” declares Yahweh.

Daughter Zion, you are so lovely and delicate, but I will destroy you.

The Lord was so angry that he shrouded the daughter of Zion with shame. He hurled down to the ground the splendor of Israel. He disregarded his footstool on the day of his anger.

He wrecked his temple like a vineyard shack and utterly destroyed his meeting place. Yahweh erased the memory in Zion of his appointed feasts and Sabbaths. In the heat of his anger, he spurned both king and priest.

“People of Zion, have no fear! Look—it’s your king coming to you riding on a young donkey!”
