The Passion Translation

Noah erected an altar dedicated to Yahweh. Then he selected ritually clean animals and birds of every species and offered them as burnt sacrifices on the altar.

Abram moved his camp and settled by the oaks of Mamre, which are at Hebron, and there he built another altar to Yahweh.

This was the place he had first built an altar to pray and worship Yahweh.

God said, “Please take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom I know you dearly love, and go to the land of Moriah. Offer him up to me as a burnt offering on one of the mountains which I will show you.”

When they arrived at the place on Mount Moriah that God had shown him, Abraham built an altar and stacked the wood on it. He tied up his son Isaac and laid him on top of the wood on the altar.

So Isaac built an altar, prayed, and worshiped Yahweh there. He pitched his tent there, and his servants started digging another well.

There he set up an altar and named it To the True God, the God of Israel.

God said to Jacob, “Arise, go at once to Bethel, and settle there. Build an altar there to God, who appeared to you when you were fleeing from your brother Esau.”

He built an altar there and named it El-Bethel, because it was the place that God had unveiled himself when Jacob was running from his brother.

Abel also brought his offering, from among the finest of the firstborn of his flocks. Yahweh was very pleased with Abel and accepted his offering,

Take with you seven pairs of all the clean animals, both male and female, and one pair of all the unclean animals, both male and female.

Take seven pairs of flying birds of all kinds, male and female, to make sure they survive on the earth.

and every animal large and small, every bird and crawling thing came out of the ark by families.

Beloved friends, what should be our proper response to God’s marvelous mercies? To surrender yourselves to God to be his sacred, living sacrifices. And live in holiness, experiencing all that delights his heart. For this becomes your genuine expression of worship.

We feast on a sacrifice at our spiritual altar, but those who serve as priests in the old system of worship have no right to eat of it.

Come and be his “living stones” who are continually being assembled into a sanctuary for God. For now you serve as holy priests, offering up spiritual sacrifices that he readily accepts through Jesus Christ.

But you are God’s chosen treasure —priests who are kings, a spiritual “nation” set apart as God’s devoted ones. He called you out of darkness to experience his marvelous light, and now he claims you as his very own. He did this so that you would broadcast his glorious wonders throughout the world.
