and carried his body to the land of Canaan. They buried him there in the cave in the field of Machpelah near Mamre, where Abraham had purchased a burial place from Ephron the Hittite.

Both the field and the cave passed from the Hittites to Abraham’s possession to be his family burial ground.

to sell me the cave he owns at Machpelah on the edge of his land. Let him sell it to me publicly and at the full price, so that I may own it for a burial site.”

Abraham took his final breath, dying at a good old age. After having lived a full, content life, he joined his ancestors.

His sons, Isaac and Ishmael, buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field which had belonged to Ephron, the son of Zohar the Hittite, east of Mamre.

Jacob came home to his father Isaac in Mamre, near Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had lived as foreigners.

He died an old man and had lived a full life when he joined his ancestors. And his sons Esau and Jacob buried him there.

I will go with you to Egypt, and I will bring your descendants back to this land. And the hand of Joseph will be there to close your eyes when you die.”

but when I go to rest with my fathers, I want you to carry me out of Egypt and bury me where they are buried.

So Jacob’s sons did as they were instructed

After burying his father, Joseph returned to Egypt with his brothers and all who had gone with him to bury his father.

Their bones were later carried back to the promised land and buried in Shechem, in the tomb Abraham had purchased for a sum of money from the sons of Hamor.
