The Passion Translation

“We have come to stay as temporary residents in this country, because in the land of Canaan, the famine is so severe that there is no pasture for your servants’ flocks. Please give us permission to settle in the land of Goshen.”

At that time, a severe famine struck the land of Canaan, forcing Abram to travel down to Egypt and live there as a foreigner.

Then Yahweh said to Abram, “Know this: your descendants will live as strangers in a foreign country. They will be enslaved and mistreated for four hundred years.

You will settle in the land of Goshen, where you will be near me—you and all your children and your grandchildren, your flocks and herds and all that you possess.

Then Jacob, with all of Joseph’s family, came from Canaan to Egypt and settled in Goshen.

For Yahweh says: “Long ago, my people went down to Egypt and lived as foreigners there, and for no good reason Assyria oppressed them.

“Then a devastating famine came over all of Egypt and Canaan, bringing great misery to the people, including our ancestors, who couldn’t find food.

God spoke with him and gave him this promise: ‘Your descendants will live in a foreign land with a people who will make slaves of them and oppress them for four hundred years.
