Then Judah stepped forward and offered, “My lord, please, may I have a word with you? You are the equal of Pharaoh. Please don’t be angry with me, your servant.

Abraham paused—then he said, “Lord, please don’t be offended with me, and let me speak . . . What if there are only thirty?” Yahweh answered, “Alright. If I find only thirty, I will spare the city.”

Then Abraham took a deep breath and asked, “Once more, please don’t let my Lord be angry with me if I make but one more request. What if you find only ten righteous?” And Yahweh answered, “Alright. I will extend my mercy and not destroy the city for the sake of ten righteous.”

“Listen to this dream I had,” he told them.

“There we were, binding sheaves of grain in the field. Suddenly, my sheaf rose up and stood upright. Then your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to mine!”

His brothers asked him, “Oh, so you think you’re going to be our king? Do you actually think you’re destined to rule over us?” So, the dream that he told them about made them hate him even more.

I hereby place you in charge of all my affairs, and all my people will obey your commands. Only I, the king, will be greater than you!

Pharaoh also said to Joseph, “I am Pharaoh. No one in all of Egypt will lift a finger without your permission!”

“No,” Joseph commanded. “Only the one who stole my silver goblet will be my slave; the rest of you will go on home in peace to your father.”

How much longer, O  Yahweh, must we endure this? Does your anger have no end? Will your jealousy burn like a raging fire?

The rage of a king is like the roar of a lion, but his sweet favor is like a gentle, refreshing rain.

I now give you one more chance. When you hear the ram’s horn and the music of the flute, the lyre, the ten-stringed harp, the triangular harp, the drums, and all the other instruments, you will bow down to the ground and worship the golden statue I have made. But if you refuse to worship it, you will be thrown immediately into a white-hot fiery furnace. So now, who is the god that can save you from my power?”

God made him so great that people everywhere—people from every nation, tribe, and language group—trembled with fear and dread of him. He killed or spared whomever he pleased, and he exalted or humbled whomever he wished.

“The Father judges no one, for he has given to the Son all the authority to judge.

“My fellow Jews, I can tell you there is no doubt that our noted patriarch has both died and been buried in his tomb, which remains to this day. So you can see that he was not referring to himself with those words.
