Abram moved his camp and settled by the oaks of Mamre, which are at Hebron, and there he built another altar to Yahweh.

After this, Abraham buried his wife Sarah in the cave there in the field of Machpelah near Mamre (now Hebron) in the land of Canaan.

She died in the land of Canaan at Kiriath Arba, now known as Hebron. There Abraham mourned and wept for her.

Joshua spoke God’s blessing over Caleb son of Jephunneh and gave him Hebron as his inheritance.

So Hebron has belonged to Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite ever since because he passionately followed Yahweh, the God of Israel.

(Hebron used to be called the City of Arba, after Arba, the most famous of all the Anakim.) Then the land was free of war.

Under Caleb’s leadership, they fought against the Canaanites living in Hebron, formerly known as Kiriath Arba, and killed the three Canaanite families descended from Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai.
