The Passion Translation

Jacob’s journey home from Paddan-Aram finally brought him safe and sound to the Canaanite city of Shechem, where he camped just outside of the city.

Abram passed through the land and stopped at the sacred site of Shechem, famous for the great oak tree of Moreh. At that time, the Canaanites were also in the land.

When he was forty, he married Rebekah. She was the daughter of Bethuel and the sister of Laban. Both her father and brother were Arameans from Paddan-Aram.

Leave at once for the land of your grandfather Bethuel in Paddan-Aram and find one of the young women there to marry, one of your uncle Laban’s daughters.

Now Jacob had set up his camp with his flocks on a hill, and Laban had him in his sights. Laban and his companions set up their camp nearby.

After Jacob returned from Paddan-Aram, God appeared to him once again and blessed him,

Israel called for Joseph and said to him, “Your brothers are grazing the flocks near Shechem. I want you to go join them.” “Yes, Father, I’ll go.” Joseph replied.

These thirty-three were the sons that Jacob and Leah had while in Paddan-Aram, besides his daughter Dinah.

Then I heard the Lord speak in his holy splendor. From his sanctuary I heard the Lord promise: “In my triumph I will be the one to measure out the portion of my inheritance to my people, and I will secure the land as I promised you. Shechem, Succoth, Gilead, Manasseh, they are all still mine!” he says. “Judah will continue to produce kings and lawgivers, and Ephraim will produce great warriors.

eighty men arrived from the towns of Shechem, Shiloh, and Samaria. They were on their way to the temple to offer gifts of grain and incense to Yahweh. They had shaved off their beards, torn their clothes, and cut themselves because they were mourning.
