Smelling the aroma of food, Esau said to Jacob, “I’m starving! Let me eat some of that red stuff you’re cooking.” (This is why he is also called Edom.)

Let peoples serve you and nations bow down to you! May you be master over your brothers and may your mother’s sons bow down to you! Those who curse you will be cursed and those who bless you will be blessed!”

Isaac replied, “You don’t understand. My blessing will empower him to be master over you. I have already given him all his brothers and relatives as servants. My blessing will richly provide him with grain and new wine. What more is left for me to do for you, my son?”

Please, my lord, go ahead of your servant. Let me move along slowly with my flocks and herds, to give them a chance to graze. I must think of my children, too, so go ahead of me, my lord, until I catch up with you in Seir.”

Esau asked Jacob, “Why did you send all these animals to me?” “I was hoping to find favor with you, my lord,” Jacob replied.

Esau (also known as Edom), settled in the hill country of Seir.

Respond gently when you are confronted and you’ll defuse the rage of another. Responding with sharp, cutting words will only make it worse. Don’t you know that being angry can ruin the testimony of even the wisest of men?

Use patience and kindness when you want to persuade leaders and watch them change their minds right in front of you. For your gentle wisdom will quell the strongest resistance.

Quickly get out of it if you possibly can! Swallow your pride, get over your embarrassment, and go tell your “friend” you want your name off that contract.

For example, our “mother,” Sarah, devoted herself to her husband, Abraham, and even called him “master.” And you have become her daughters when you do what is right without fear and intimidation.

Yahweh, when you advanced from Seir, and when you marched from Edom’s plains, the earth trembled, the sky poured, the clouds burst,
