The Passion Translation

For these twenty years that I’ve lived among you, I slaved away fourteen years for your two daughters, and six years for your flocks. And besides all that, you’ve reduced my wages over and over.

You can live with him for a while until your brother calms down.

Afterward, Laban said to Jacob, “Just because you’re my relative doesn’t mean I expect you to work for nothing. Tell me, what do you want your wages to be?”

Just name your price, and I’ll give it to you.”

Jacob continued, “For the last twenty years I have served you, and the whole time your sheep and goats did not miscarry, nor did I feast on any of your rams.

Many times, scorching heat consumed me by day and hard frost by night; I endured sleepless nights.

You both know I have worked for your father as hard as I could,

although he has cheated me and reduced my wages over and over. Yet God has not allowed him to harm me.

He instructed them, “Give this message from me to my master Esau, ‘I am your servant. I have lived with our uncle Laban all these years

But God’s amazing grace has made me who I am! And his grace to me was not fruitless. In fact, I worked harder than all the rest, yet not in my own strength but God’s, for his empowering grace is poured out upon me.

In my difficult travels I’ve faced many dangerous situations: perilous rivers, robbers, foreigners, and even my own people. I’ve survived deadly peril in the city, in the wilderness, with storms at sea, and with spies posing as believers.
