My son, you must do what I say. Run away at once to my brother Laban in Haran.

Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot, the son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, his son Abram’s wife, and they all departed together from the Chaldean city of Ur to go into the land of Canaan. But when they journeyed as far as Haran, they settled there.

Now Rebekah had an older brother named Laban, and when he heard everything the man had told his sister and saw her gold nose ring and the costly bracelets dangling on her wrists, Laban ran out to meet the man waiting at the well—and there he was standing beside his camels.

When he was forty, he married Rebekah. She was the daughter of Bethuel and the sister of Laban. Both her father and brother were Arameans from Paddan-Aram.

“My son,” his mother said, “let any curse against you fall on me alone! Just do what I say and go and get the goats for me.”

But when Rebekah found out about her older son Esau’s plan, she quickly sent for her younger son Jacob, and said to him, “Listen, your brother Esau is planning to exact revenge by killing you.

Listen carefully, my son, and do everything I tell you.

Jacob left Beersheba and journeyed toward Haran.

Then Isaac sent Jacob on his way to Paddan-Aram, the land of his grandfather Bethuel the Aramean, to the home of Laban, Bethuel’s son and the brother of Rebekah, the mother of Jacob and Esau.

Furthermore, Esau found out that Jacob had obeyed his parents and fled to Paddan-Aram.

God said to Jacob, “Arise, go at once to Bethel, and settle there. Build an altar there to God, who appeared to you when you were fleeing from your brother Esau.”

The eye that mocks his father and dishonors his elderly mother deserves to be plucked out by the ravens of the valley and fed to the young vultures!

The words of Jonadab son of Rechab ordered his descendants to drink no wine, and they have fully obeyed their ancestor’s command, for they drank no wine even until today. But I have spoken to you so urgently, over and over, yet you refuse to listen.

Peter and the apostles replied, “We must listen to and obey God more than pleasing religious leaders.
