The Passion Translation

After completing their pact at Beersheba, King Abimelech and Phicol, his army commander, departed and returned to Philistine country.

One who escaped came to Abram the Hebrew and told him what had happened to Lot. Abram was living by the oaks of Mamre the Amorite. Mamre had two brothers, Eshcol and Aner, who were allied by treaty with Abram.

So Abraham took sheep and cattle, gave them to Abimelech, and the two men made a covenant.

That place was called Beersheba, because it was there that both men swore an oath to one another.

Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and there he worshiped Yahweh, the everlasting God.

He acquired so many flocks and herds and so many servants that the Philistines grew jealous,

One day, after Isaac had lived there awhile, the Philistine king Abimelech looked out his window and saw Isaac affectionately caressing his wife Rebekah.

Come now, let’s form a covenant between you and me. Let it endure as a witness between us.”

Now may the God of Abraham and the god of Nahor judge between us!” Jacob made his vow by the Awesome One of his father Isaac.

Once again, the Israelites continued doing evil in the sight of Yahweh, so he subjected them to Philistine rule for forty years.
