Abraham journeyed from the oaks of Mamre to the southern region of Canaan and settled between Kadesh and Shur, to live as a temporary resident in Gerar.

Now, another famine struck the land, like the one in Abraham’s time. Isaac traveled to Gerar where Abimelech was the Philistine king.

That is why the well is called Spring of the Living One Who Watches Over Me. The well is still there, between Kadesh and Bered.

The angel of Yahweh encountered Hagar by a spring in the wilderness, the spring on the way to Shur.

Then they turned back and attacked En-mishpat (that is, Kadesh) and subdued all the country of the Amalekites and the Amorites who lived in Hazazon-tamar.

Then Abram journeyed from there by stages through the southern desert region.

And Abraham lived many years in peace as a foreigner in Philistine country.
