The Passion Translation

Once they were safely outside the city, the angels said to them, “Run for your lives! Don’t stop anywhere in the plain until you’ve reached the mountains. And don’t even look back, or you’ll die!”

Lot lifted his eyes and carefully surveyed the land around him all the way to Zoar. He noticed that the Jordan Valley was fertile and well-watered (this was before Yahweh had destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah). It looked beautiful, like the garden of Yahweh, or like Egypt.

Now the valley of Siddim was full of tar pits, and as the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah and their armies retreated from the battle and fled, some of them fell into the tar pits, and the rest fled to the hill country.

As Yahweh’s two companions went on toward Sodom, Abraham remained there, as Yahweh paused before Abraham.

Lot replied, “Oh no, my lords.

Now, you must hurry. Run to that village, for I can’t do anything until you are there.” (That is why the village was called Zoar.)

But Lot’s wife turned and gazed longingly on the city and turned into a pillar of salt.

Afraid to remain in Zoar, Lot left there and settled in the hill country and lived in a cave with his two daughters.

I look up to the mountains and hills, longing for God’s help. But then I realize that our true help and protection is only from the Lord, our Creator who made the heavens and the earth.

The people of Moab shout, ‘Flee for your lives and be like a lonely shrub in the desert.’

But when he saw many coming from among the wealthy elite of Jewish society and many of the religious leaders known as Pharisees coming to witness the baptism, he began to denounce them, saying, “You offspring of vipers! Who warned you to slither away like snakes from the fire of God’s judgment?

For your life is infinitely more than just the food you eat or the clothing you wear.

Jesus responded, “Why do you keep looking back to your past and have second thoughts about following me? If you turn back you are not fit for God’s kingdom.”

then how would we expect to escape punishment if we despise the very truths that give us life? The Lord himself was the first to announce these things, and those who heard him firsthand confirmed their accuracy.
