From there, he journeyed on toward the hill country east of Bethel and pitched his tent with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. And there he built another altar to Yahweh where he prayed and worshiped Yahweh.

Abram moved his camp and settled by the oaks of Mamre, which are at Hebron, and there he built another altar to Yahweh.

And he journeyed on from place to place as far as the hill country region of Bethel. He returned to the place between Bethel and Ai where he had pitched his tent at the beginning.

This was the place he had first built an altar to pray and worship Yahweh.

Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and there he worshiped Yahweh, the everlasting God.

When they arrived at the place on Mount Moriah that God had shown him, Abraham built an altar and stacked the wood on it. He tied up his son Isaac and laid him on top of the wood on the altar.

On their way home, the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and East Manasseh came to the town of Geliloth near the Jordan River. So they built their own large, impressive altar there.

Joshua sent spies from Jericho to Ai (a small city near Beth Aven, southeast of Bethel), with orders to spy out the land. So the spies left for Ai.

He placed a smaller force of about five thousand men west of the city to set an ambush between Bethel and Ai.

Not a man remained in Ai or in Bethel who did not go out in pursuit of Israel, leaving their city undefended.

Joshua and his entire army set out to attack Ai. He chose thirty thousand valiant warriors and sent them ahead by night

Afterward, Joshua built near Mount Ebal a stone altar to Yahweh, the God of Israel.

Joshua then sent them off, and they proceeded to take up a concealed position west of Ai, between Ai and Bethel, while Joshua spent the night with the rest of the troops.

So Gideon built an altar to Yahweh there and named it “In Yahweh there is Peace.” (The altar is still standing at Ophrah, which belongs to the clan of Abiezer.)
