Keep it up, sun and moon! Don’t stop now, all you twinkling stars of light!

Let the entire universe erupt with praise to God. He spoke and created it all—from nothing to something.

He rises on one horizon, completing his circuit on the other, warming lives and lands with his heat.

You own the day and the night. Sunlight and starlight call you Creator.

Look at the splendor of your skies, your creative genius glowing in the heavens. When I gaze at your moon and your stars, mounted like jewels in their settings, I know you are the fascinating artist who fashioned it all! But I have to ask this question:

For the stars of the heavens and their constellations will not give their light. The rising sun will be obscured, and the moon won’t shine.

Then the sun and moon will hang their heads in shame, for Yahweh, Commander of Angel Armies, will reign! He will manifest his glory on Mount Zion in Jerusalem, before all her elders!

Lift up your eyes to the sky and see for yourself. Who do you think created the cosmos? He lit every shining star and formed every glowing galaxy, and stationed them all where they belong. He has numbered, counted, and given each one a name. They shine because of God’s incredible power and awesome might; not one fails to appear!

I create light, and I make it dark. I make bliss, and I create adversity. I am Yahweh who does all these things.’

“I am Yahweh All-Powerful. I declare to you: I order the sun to light up the day, the stars and moon to brighten the night. I stir the sea and make the ocean waves roar. My name is Yahweh, Commander of Angel Armies.

“Then immediately this is what will take place: ‘The sun will be darkened and the moon give no light. The stars will fall from the sky and all the cosmic powers will be shaken.’

For three hours, beginning at noon, a sudden and unexpected darkness came over the earth.

There is the radiance of the sun and differing radiance for the moon and for the stars. Even the stars differ in their shining.

The city has no need for the sun or moon to shine, for the glory of God is its light, and its lamp is the Lamb.
