Daniel 1:1

The Passion Translation

It was the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah when Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, marched on Jerusalem and besieged the city.

‘Some of your own sons who come after you will be deported and become high officials in the palace of the king of Babylon.’ ”

This is the message that came to Jeremiah about the people of Judah. He received this prophecy in the fourth year that Jehoiakim son of Josiah was king of Judah and the first year of Nebuchadnezzar’s reign in Babylon.

When Jehoiakim son of Josiah was king of Judah, Yahweh spoke to me and said,

However, when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon invaded the land, we decided, ‘We must protect ourselves! Let’s go to Jerusalem to escape the armies of the Babylonians and the Syrians.’ That is why we are living now in Jerusalem.”

In the fourth year that Jehoiakim son of Josiah was king of Judah, Yahweh said to me,

In the fourth year of the reign of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah, Yahweh gave me a word for Baruch son of Neriah while I was dictating to Baruch the message that he wrote down in a scroll.

Yahweh spoke to me this prophecy against mighty Babylon, the land of the Chaldeans:

In the nineteenth year that Nebuchadnezzar was king of Babylon, on the tenth day of the fifth month of that year, the field general Nebuzaradan, who served the king, entered Jerusalem.

Here is the record of the number of those deported by Nebuchadnezzar in the seventh year of his reign: 3,023 men from Judah.

Then Daniel was brought into the presence of King Belshazzar, and the king asked him, “So, you are the Daniel of the Jewish exiles my predecessor brought here from Judah?
