God said to him, ‘Go! Leave behind your country and your relatives. Begin your journey and come to the land that I will show you.’

Now Yahweh said to Abram, “Leave it all behind — your native land, your people, your father’s household, and go to the land that I will show you.

Then he said to him, “I am Yahweh, who brought you out of the Babylonian city of Ur, to give you all this land to possess.”

When God sent me out to wander from my father’s house, I said to her, ‘Here is how you can show your love for me. Everywhere we go, you must say about me, “He’s my brother.” ’ ”

“Whoever loves father or mother or son or daughter more than me is not fit to be my disciple.

Likewise, unless you surrender all to me, giving up all you possess, you cannot be one of my disciples.

“So Abraham left southeastern Iraq and began his journey. He settled in Haran and stayed there until his father passed away. Then God had him move to the land of Israel with only a promise.

For this reason, “Come out from among them and be separate,” says the Lord. “Touch nothing that is unclean, and I will embrace you.

Faith motivated Abraham to obey God’s call and leave the familiar to discover the territory he was destined to inherit from God. So he left with only a promise and without even knowing ahead of time where he was going, Abraham stepped out in faith.

I took your father Abraham from that land and led him through all the land of Canaan. I gave him a son, Isaac, and through Isaac I multiplied his descendants.
