Post a guard at my mouth, God, set a watch at the door of my lips. Don’t let me so much as dream of evil or thoughtlessly fall into bad company. Like a rock pulverized by a maul, let their bones be scattered at the gates of hell.

Guard your tongue from profanity, and no more lying through your teeth.

The gossip of bad people gets them in trouble; the conversation of good people keeps them out of it.

Indolence wants it all and gets nothing; the energetic have something to show for their lives.

Frivolous talk provokes a derisive smile; wise speech evokes nothing but respect.

Words kill, words give life; they’re either poison or fruit—you choose.

Fools are undone by their big mouths; their souls are crushed by their words.

Gossips can’t keep secrets, so never confide in blabbermouths.

Watch your words and hold your tongue; you’ll save yourself a lot of grief.

Anyone who sets himself up as “religious” by talking a good game is self-deceived. This kind of religion is hot air and only hot air. Real religion, the kind that passes muster before God the Father, is this: Reach out to the homeless and loveless in their plight, and guard against corruption from the godless world.
