The horseman rode out to meet Jehu and said, “The king wants to know if there’s anything wrong.” Jehu said, “What’s it to you whether things are right or wrong? Fall in behind me.” The sentry said, “The messenger reached them, but he’s not returning.”

The king then sent a second horseman. When he reached them he said, “The king wants to know if there’s anything wrong.” Jehu said, “What’s it to you whether things are right or wrong? Fall in behind me.”

Listen, far-flung islands, pay attention, faraway people: God put me to work from the day I was born. The moment I entered the world he named me. He gave me speech that would cut and penetrate. He kept his hand on me to protect me. He made me his straight arrow and hid me in his quiver. He said to me, “You’re my dear servant, Israel, through whom I’ll shine.”

“And then they’ll go out and look at what happened to those who rebelled against me. Corpses! Maggots endlessly eating away on them, an endless supply of fuel for fires. Everyone who sees what’s happened and smells the stench retches.”
