Ashkelon shall see it, and be afraid; Gaza too, and shall writhe in anguish; Ekron also, because its hopes are confounded. The king shall perish from Gaza; Ashkelon shall be uninhabited;

In the year that King Ahaz died came this oracle:

The word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the Philistines, before Pharaoh struck down Gaza.

"What are you to me, O Tyre and Sidon, and all the regions of Philistia? Are you paying me back for something? If you are paying me back, I will return your payment on your own head swiftly and speedily.

Thus says the LORD: "For three transgressions of Gaza, and for four, I will not revoke the punishment, because they carried into exile a whole people to deliver them up to Edom.

I will cut off the inhabitants from Ashdod, and him who holds the scepter from Ashkelon; I will turn my hand against Ekron, and the remnant of the Philistines shall perish," says the Lord GOD.

But behold, the Lord will strip her of her possessions and strike down her power on the sea, and she shall be devoured by fire.

a mixed people[2] shall dwell in Ashdod, and I will cut off the pride of Philistia.

Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, "Rise and go toward the south[4] to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza." This is a desert place.

and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

as it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death.
