What is man, that he can be pure? Or he who is born of a woman, that he can be righteous?

How then can man be in the right before God? How can he who is born of woman be pure?

Though I am in the right, my own mouth would condemn me; though I am blameless, he would prove me perverse.

O Israel, hope in the LORD! For with the LORD there is steadfast love, and with him is plentiful redemption.

Enter not into judgment with your servant, for no one living is righteous before you.

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right[2] spirit within me.

and that to you, O Lord, belongs steadfast love. For you will render to a man according to his work.

But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.

For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving, abounding in steadfast love to all who call upon you.

I will declare your righteousness and your deeds, but they will not profit you.

I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols I will cleanse you.

Who is a God like you, pardoning iniquity and passing over transgression for the remnant of his inheritance? He does not retain his anger forever, because he delights in steadfast love.

"I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation.

He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy,

to show the mercy promised to our fathers and to remember his holy covenant,

because of the tender mercy of our God, whereby the sunrise shall visit us[8] from on high

in order somehow to make my fellow Jews jealous, and thus save some of them.

But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace.

Do not be conformed to this world,[3] but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.[4]

For by works of the law no human being[3] will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.

For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law.

And to the one who does not work but trusts him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness,

though they were not yet born and had done nothing either good or bad -- in order that God's purpose of election might continue, not because of works but because of his call --

So then it depends not on human will or exertion,[2] but on God, who has mercy.

What shall we say, then? That Gentiles who did not pursue righteousness have attained it, that is, a righteousness that is by faith;

And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

yet we know that a person is not justified[1] by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ,[2] so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified.

But[2] God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us,

and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds,

that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word,

Not because of your righteousness or the uprightness of your heart are you going in to possess their land, but because of the wickedness of these nations the LORD your God is driving them out from before you, and that he may confirm the word that the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.

who saved us and called us to[1] a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began,[2]

But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared,

let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.

Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

if they then fall away, since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
