For he stands at the right hand of the needy, to save him from those who condemn his soul to death.

"Because the poor are plundered, because the needy groan, I will now arise," says the LORD; "I will place him in the safety for which he longs."

He is like a lion eager to tear, as a young lion lurking in ambush.

The wicked draw the sword and bend their bows to bring down the poor and needy, to slay those whose way is upright;

Whoever oppresses a poor man insults his Maker, but he who is generous to the needy honors him.

Whoever oppresses the poor to increase his own wealth, or gives to the rich, will only come to poverty.

Like a roaring lion or a charging bear is a wicked ruler over a poor people.

What do you mean by crushing my people, by grinding the face of the poor?" declares the Lord GOD of hosts.

As for the scoundrel -- his devices are evil; he plans wicked schemes to ruin the poor with lying words, even when the plea of the needy is right.

For wicked men are found among my people; they lurk like fowlers lying in wait.[1] They set a trap; they catch men.

He is a bear lying in wait for me, a lion in hiding;

The people of the land have practiced extortion and committed robbery. They have oppressed the poor and needy, and have extorted from the sojourner without justice.

Does a lion roar in the forest, when he has no prey? Does a young lion cry out from his den, if he has taken nothing?

The godly has perished from the earth, and there is no one upright among mankind; they all lie in wait for blood, and each hunts the other with a net.

He brings all of them up with a hook; he drags them out with his net; he gathers them in his dragnet; so he rejoices and is glad.

You pierced with his own arrows the heads of his warriors, who came like a whirlwind to scatter me, rejoicing as if to devour the poor in secret.

The sound of the wail of the shepherds, for their glory is ruined! The sound of the roar of the lions, for the thicket of the Jordan is ruined!

He who is a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them.

But do not be persuaded by them, for more than forty of their men are lying in ambush for him, who have bound themselves by an oath neither to eat nor drink till they have killed him. And now they are ready, waiting for your consent."
