"Speak to the people of Israel, and get from them staffs, one for each fathers' house, from all their chiefs according to their fathers' houses, twelve staffs. Write each man's name on his staff,

The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler's staff from between his feet, until tribute comes to him;[1] and to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.

The enrollment of the priests was according to their fathers' houses; that of the Levites from twenty years old and upward was according to their offices, by their divisions.

The LORD sends forth from Zion your mighty scepter. Rule in the midst of your enemies!

For the scepter of wickedness shall not rest on the land allotted to the righteous, lest the righteous stretch out their hands to do wrong.

With it you shall anoint the tent of meeting and the ark of the testimony,

And take in your hand this staff, with which you shall do the signs."

The LORD said to him, "What is that in your hand?" He said, "A staff."

And fire has gone out from the stem of its shoots, has consumed its fruit, so that there remains in it no strong stem, no scepter for ruling. This is a lamentation and has become a lamentation.

sharpened for slaughter, polished to flash like lightning!(Or shall we rejoice? You have despised the rod, my son, with everything of wood.)[3]

For it will not be a testing -- what could it do if you despise the rod?"[4] declares the Lord GOD.

Shepherd your people with your staff, the flock of your inheritance, who dwell alone in a forest in the midst of a garden land;[3] let them graze in Bashan and Gilead as in the days of old.

[1] The LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

and write Aaron's name on the staff of Levi. For there shall be one staff for the head of each fathers' house.

On the day when Moses had finished setting up the tabernacle and had anointed and consecrated it with all its furnishings and had anointed and consecrated the altar with all its utensils,
