while others, to test him, kept seeking from him a sign from heaven.

And as they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them,

Jesus said to them, "Watch and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees."

For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom,

This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground.

But the high priest rose up, and all who were with him (that is, the party of the Sadducees), and filled with jealousy

There came to him some Sadducees, those who deny that there is a resurrection,

But he perceived their craftiness, and said to them,

And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?"

And Sadducees came to him, who say that there is no resurrection. And they asked him a question, saying,

But, knowing their hypocrisy, he said to them, "Why put me to the test? Bring me a denarius[4] and let me look at it."

And Pharisees came up and in order to test him asked, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?"

Next day, that is, after the day of Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate

"The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses' seat,

The same day Sadducees came to him, who say that there is no resurrection, and they asked him a question,

But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, "Why put me to the test, you hypocrites?

Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to entangle him in his talk.

And Pharisees came up to him and tested him by asking, "Is it lawful to divorce one's wife for any cause?"

Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said,

But the Pharisees went out and conspired against him, how to destroy him.

And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?"

For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own eyes.
